Turning on the Christmas Lights - Civic Park

04 Dec 2015

Newcastle's iconic Civic Park fountain has been transformed into a festive display with five floating Christmas trees that will sparkle with nearly 10,000 lights when they are officially switched on at an event tonight, Friday 4 December 2015.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says it is a joyous time of year and Newcastle, as one of Australia's largest cities, now has a fabulous display which will attract locals and visitors alike.
"Part of our Newcastle 2030 vision is to create vibrant and activated public places that encourage social interaction and inclusion as well as opportunities for locals and visitors to discover our beautiful city. Events and installations in public places are a key way of achieving this vision."
"Our switch on event in Civic Park tonight will see this beautiful display come to life.  I hope to see lots of Santa hats in the park enjoying the entertainment."
"Our display features five Christmas trees with the main tree standing at 7.5metres tall with 5000 lights and the smaller trees standing at 3.5m tall with 1000 lights. I am excited to be tasked with officially switching on the lights tomorrow night."
