Newcastle Art Gallery and the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation were saddened to hear of the passing of inaugural Gallery Director Gil Docking OAM. Docking was appointed in 1958 shortly after the Gallery was constructed and was instrumental in developing the Gallery into the institution it is today.
Under his directorship the Gallery acquired a substantial collection of Australian paintings, sculpture and ceramics including William Dobell's Portrait of a strapper 1941. Docking left Newcastle in 1965 to become Director of Auckland Art Gallery but had a continuing relationship with Newcastle Art Gallery over the years as a supporter and Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation member.
‘He was one of the founding fathers of art in our region, a true gentleman with a passion and keen eye for acquiring and exhibiting contemporary artists of the day creating a legacy for the Newcastle community, Gil will be greatly missed by all’. Vale Gil Docking.
Newcastle Art Gallery will host a celebration of the life of Gil Docking on Monday 7 December 2015 at 2pm.
