Newcastle - Civic substation upgrade

Ausgrid is upgrading the electrical substation in Christie Place, Newcastle, which supplies power to City Hall and Civic Theatre.

The existing substation will be demolished and replaced with a new kiosk. In conjunction with this upgrade, we're installing a new electrical distribution network to these venues.

Work starts in August 2018 and will be staged over eight months.

What to expect

Christie Street will be closed from time to time to enable the work to occur, however impacts to City Hall and Civic Theatre will be minimal.

All Wheeler Place electrical services currently fed from the City Administration Centre will be transferred to the Civic Theatre electrical supply. This will require excavation in Wheeler Place which will take place between 20 February and 15 March 2019. This excavation will generate significant noise as we navigate the area with a saw-cutting machine and sucker truck. Pedestrian access will be partly impacted but detours will be in place and traffic management representatives will be on site to direct vehicles and pedestrians as required.
