Recovery and Help

When an emergency happens, relevant State and Federal Government authorities and other service agencies coordinate recovery operations to help people and communities get back on their feet after an emergency.

Immediate assistance

If required, Evacuation Centres will be established to provide immediate assistance to those evacuated from their homes or in need of shelter. Evacuation centres are usually coordinated by the Department of Community Services (DoCS) who can help you with welfare, food, accommodation and clothing needs as well as providing personal support.

Disaster Recovery Centres will also be established to provide a one-stop-shop for support and assistance. The agencies providing services in the Disaster Recovery Centres may include:

  • Department of Community Services (DoCS)
  • Community Partners and Agencies (NGOs)
  • Department of Commerce
  • Department of Primary Industries
  • NSW Health Department
  • Department of Housing
  • Centrelink
  • Electricity service providers
  • Office of Fair Trading
  • Telecommunications service providers.

24 hour State Disaster Recovery Centre

The Department of Community Services provides a 24 Hour Centre telephone service.

If you have been affected by an emergency situation you should call the 24 hour State Disaster Recovery Centre telephone service on 1800 018 444 or register with DoCS at the local Evacuation or Disaster Recovery Centre.
