City Library Refurbishment
City Library Refurbishment - We are building an exciting new library space for the future
The Library War Memorial Cultural Centre (WMCC) in Laman Street, Newcastle will undergo a significant refurbishment in 2017.
Improvements since the last refurbishment 20 years ago have been ad hoc and changes in technology have resulted in outdated workflows.
The refurbishment will ensure the library remains fit for purpose into the future by redesigning the layout, adding significant technology activity areas and creating multiple zones for different uses.
This project is funded by a $200,000 Infrastructure Grant from the NSW State Library and an additional $700,000 from Council.
The City Library will close on Monday 24 April 2017
for approximately two weeks to allow relocation of library facilities to the Lovett Gallery and lounge areas on the second floor.
Construction is expected to commence in early May 2017 and be completed in September 2017 ahead of City Library's 60th birthday celebrations.
Impacts during construction
The library facilities will still be available during the refurbishment. The library will be temporarily relocated to the Lovett Gallery on the second floor and normal operating hours will be in place from Monday 8 May 2017
(Monday to Friday 9:30am to 8pm and Saturday 9:30am to 2pm).
The after-hours return chute will be located in the same place on the right hand side of the building.
There will be site sheds in the rear carpark resulting in some loss of parking.
The ground floor toilets will remain open during the refurbishment.
