Newcastle City Library will be closed for 11 days next month for a final fit out and restock after a major revitalisation project.
Final preparations for the grand re-opening and 60th
anniversary of the War Memorial Cultural Centre, in which the library sits, will begin on 30 September 2017.
To allow the finishing touches to be added, The War Memorial Cultural Centre and the Local History Library will be closed from Tuesday 3 October 2017 to Saturday 14 October 2017.
"This is an exciting time for Newcastle Library as the final work is done on its transformation into a facility befitting the digital age," Council's Interim CEO, Jeremy Bath, said.
"The original design and layout of the facility catered to manual record keeping of the 1960s and a catchment area of around 150,000 people, so it's a timely upgrade ahead of the building's Diamond anniversary.
"I'm afraid we have to close it to complete the work so I apologise in advance for the inconvenience, but at the same time, promise library patrons a vastly improved facility when it re-opens on Monday 16 October."
The major refurbishment and modernisation begun in April includes a new digital 'makerspace' to showcase the latest technologies on the library's first floor along with a new collaborative work and study areas.
Space to read, research or escape the elements has been increased by 85sqm, and both quiet spaces and a children's zone have been added as part of the $1.3 million upgrade
The 11-day closure will allow staff to safely move stock from the temporary library on the second floor and carry out other necessary tasks, allow furniture deliveries through the front entrance and enable cleaners to clean the foyer thoroughly.
The After Hours Return Chute will remain open to accept the return of items.
The War Memorial Cultural Centre (WMCC) was last refurbished more than 20 years ago.
It was opened by His Excellency the Governor of New South Wales Lieutenant-General E. W. Woodward on 26 October 1957.
The upgrade has been part funded by a $200,000 Infrastructure Grant from the NSW State Library.
