Heritage colours

If you are considering a new colour scheme to the exterior of your heritage listed home, you need to notify council in writing of your proposal.

High quality and aesthetically pleasing colour schemes that respond to the age of the house and the architecture of the street are strongly encouraged.

Council has prepared an inspirational fact sheet for people considering new colours for their hom:

The colours you select are for you to determine, although there are several restrictions you may need to consider. Painting over face brickwork or natural stone is not permitted and roof materials must not be changed without the prior approval of Council.

For example – terracotta roof tiles cannot be replaced with other materials unless development consent has been obtained. As a general rule, changing the colour of original roof tiles will not be supported.

Masonry wall surfaces such as face brick can be maintained by a gentle clean or by re-pointing the joints where significant deterioration is evident. Taking preventative care of masonry surfaces is the best way of maintaining the natural beauty of your historic home.
