Newcastle's beaches and coastline are some of the city's greatest assets. It is an area that is increasingly being recognised at local, national and international levels for its beauty, environmental values, recreational opportunities and diverse range of activities.

Coastal revitalisation
The City of Newcastle, the NSW Government through the Land and Property Management Authority and Hunter Surf Lifesaving all have roles and responsibilities in maintaining, using and promoting coastal assets.

Community involvement and input from a range of different organisations and government agencies are essential in ensuring improvements along the coastline are what is wanted and needed.

Stockton sector
Stockton is a peninsula bounded on three sides by water - the Hunter River to the south and west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The Stockton sector includes Corroba Oval, Stockton Beach, Stockton East and Griffith Park.

City beaches sector
The city beaches popular with both the local community and tourists. Their unique proximity to the CBD, the increase in higher density residential development in the city and the proximity of regional rail to the beaches accounts for the popularity of these area.

Suburban beaches
The Suburban Beaches sector includes Bar Beach, Dixon Beach and Merewether Beach. These are well used by local residents and visitors for day to day recreation.

Nobbys Headland
Everyone is now able to enjoy the sweeping views of city and Pacific Ocean from Nobbys Headland. The Nobbys Lighthouse grounds will be available for free public access on the first and third Sunday of each month between 10am and 4pm.
