Strategic priorities

The elected 2008 - 2012 Council has identified four key focus areas and objectives for their term in office.

Economic and Asset Development

A focus on economic development and tourism and managing our assets effectively.

Key performance indicators include: increased visitor tourism numbers and expenditure; a positive return on investment for nominated commercial assets; and a reduction in non productive infrastructure owned by Council.

Community and Cultural Development

Ensure Newcastle has a high quality of life through effective place management though community engagement, city presentation and compliance.

Key performance indicators include: LGA wide participation in Newcastle Voice, the introduction of a system for collation and measurement of complaints on cleanliness of public toilets, streets and facilities; maintenance of graffiti removal within targeted timeframes; appropriate, consistent and fair enforcement of laws and regulations.

Environmental Enhancement

Ensure Newcastle has an environmentally sustainable future, focusing on biodiversity corridors, city renewal, integrated transport and targeted and effective planning.

Key performance indicators include: Reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from Council facilities; adopt urban design guidelines for five renewal corridors identified in the Lower Hunter Regional Strategy; increase the target of km of shared pathways within the Newcastle LGA; and achieve specified targets for environmental work programs.

Governance and Organisational Development

A well performing, customer focused, open and transparent organisation that engages the community and encourages participation in Council matters.

Key performance indicators include: Increase accountability for efficiency and effectiveness of Council's services; Improve the Australian Business Excellence Framework Assessment Score and roll out the framework to alls ervice areas; reduce number of customer complaints; and achieve customer service standards.
