Bar Beach cliff stabilisation
Newcastle's beaches and coastline are some of the city's greatest assets.
It is an area that is increasingly being recognised at local, national and international levels for its beauty, environmental values, recreational opportunities and diverse range of activities. The City of Newcastle is improving many coastal areas and is about to embark a project to stabilise Bar Beach cliff.
This is a staged project and stage one includes
- stabilising the cliff face at the north end of Bar Beach
- extending the Bathers Way by building a new pathway following the cliff to the east of the car park
- constructing a viewing platform and
- landscaping.
Project update - December 2011
All of the scaling and grooming works on the cliff have been completed and, despite the best efforts of the weather to hold up the sub-contractors, the two basket gabion walls are now fully completed. Civil works are now well under way and now that we have officially moved into summer we are hoping that the weather stays on our side. The project should be completed in early 2012.

Thanks for your feedback
Community consultation was undertaken for this project in late 2009. Many community and Newcastle Voice members provided valuable feedback and suggestions some of which has been incorporated into the final design. Thank you for having your say.
Note: Public access to the Bar Beach area will be maintained throughout the project. There will be changes to pedestrian entry/exit points at different times throughout the works.
