Merewether Beach works

In July 2010 Council completed and adopted the Merewether Beach Public Domain Plan. Council asked for Watkins Street and John Parade works to be funded and implemented.
Watkins Street carpark upgrade and street realignment
Upgrade and changes to carpark; changes to road alignment and kerb lines; water sensitive urban design solutions.
Current status
The car-park is now complete with some more landscaping to come. Council and Hunter Water have jointly funded the installation of a gross pollutant trap at the car-park. The gross pollutant trap acts like a filter for stormwater across a large section of Merewether and will help prevent litter, green waste and sediment ending up on the beach.
The realignment of Watkins Street and associated pedestrian and landscaping works will recommence after Surfest, March 2012. The works are about 50% complete with the central median and west bound road pavement completed. These works are due for completion mid 2012.

Work on John Parade will commence in March 2012 after Surfest. These works will initially include a new roundabout in Ocean Street near Dixon Park and relocation of services. This will be followed by the creation of a cycle lane and widening of the promenade up to 6m and one-way traffic movement (Northbound).

Promenade Surf Club to Ocean Baths: Documentation of the works is nearing completion. Construction of this stage is programmed to commence in July 2012 with an expected completion time of December 2012.
Lifeguard facility and plaza area (to Surf Club) Geotechnical work is currently being undertaken to adequately address ground conditions. This area is likely to be constructed separately to the remainder of the promenade to ensure that surf club to ocean baths promenade works are not delayed.

Current status
The design development phase is underway. Further design and feasibility work is occurring in relationship to both the Surf Club and the design of Jefferson Park.
