Hunter Stories of The Great War 1914-1918
Shadows of the Wire examines World War I from a Hunter Valley perspective. It looks at the enthusiasm of early enlistment through to the pain of loss and repatriation.
The exhibition features a detailed interactive history presentation that examines World War I from both an Allied and Axis perspective.
The exhibition is divided into eight themes:
- Enlistment and Training
- Gallipoli and the Middle East
- The Western Front
- Technology
- Weapons
- Nursing
- The Home Front
- Coming Home.
The exhibition is located on the ground floor of the Heritage wing.
Artefacts
Artefacts range from the poignant bullet scarred personal remains of Driver Grothen to examples of the new technology that made World War I.
Many of the objects on display have been donated or loaned by Hunter Region individuals.

Visitors can search the comprehensive database of biographical and photographic sources. The database provides the details of those Hunter residents who served in World War I.
If you have a serving Hunter ancestor who is not represented on our database, we would like to know so their details can be added.
