Controlled burns for Newcastle area
The City of Newcastle in conjunction with New South Wales Fire Brigades undertake controlled burns to reduce hazards for the fire season.
The two hazard reduction control burns scheduled for today, Monday 9 January at Craignair Close, Wallsend and tomorrow, Tuesday 10 January in bushland adjacent to Ridgeway Road, New Lambton Heights have been postponed due to the wet weather overnight.
The burns will be rescheduled and a further notice will be sent out.
This controlled type of burning benefits the environment by encouraging native plant regeneration while reducing the potential risk to people and property.
Nearby homeowners are encouraged to take precautions against smoke, hot embers and heat generated from the fire by:
- closing windows and doors to keep out smoke
- remove clothing from clothes line and
- protect or remove items which may be damaged by hot embers, smoke or radiant heat (eg. outdoor furniture, pool covers, plastic items, plants, watering systems, pets).
People who are affected by asthma or respiratory disease should take steps to protect themselves from any smoke.
The controlled burn generally start at 8am and finish at 3pm. Burns are dependent on favourable weather conditions on the day.
