    Coastal revitalisation

    The City of Newcastle, the NSW Government through the Land and Property Management Authority and Hunter Surf Lifesaving all have roles and responsibilities in maintaining, using and promoting coastal assets.

    Coastal management

    Coastal councils are encouraged to develop Coastline Management Plans in accordance with the NSW Government’s Coastline Management Manual (1990) and NSW Coastal Policy (1997).

  • Merewether Surf Reserve

    Merewether beach has been recognised for its contribution to Australian surfing by being gazetted as a National Surfing Reserve.

    Newcastle’s coastline is an exceptional natural asset for residents and visitors.

  • Estuary management

    View Source Estuaries are waterways that extend from the tidal limit downstream to the ocean. The Hunter River Estuary (Hunter Estuary) is one of the largest estuaries in NSW, extending some 75 kilometres in land from the ocean.

  • Stockton

    Stockton Beach is an extensive sandy beach which extends from the northern side of the mouth of the Hunter River northwards to the boundary of the Newcastle Local Government Area.

  • Hunter Wetlands

    The National Parks and Wildlife Service is preparing a plan of management for Hunter Wetlands National Park.

  • Themeda Grasslands

    Themeda grassland on Seacliffs and Coastal Headlands is an endangered ecological community in NSW, which means that the grassland is at risk of extinction. Council is committed to protecting Themeda grasslands for future generations to experience.
