Newcastle Environmental Management Plan
The Newcastle environment is diverse, from the coast and estuary, to creeks, wetlands, and bushland.
However, a long history of human land use and development has substantially impacted on the local environment. Newcastle City Council has developed the Newcastle Environment Management Plan 2003 (NEMP) to guide environmental management within the local government area (LGA). The NEMP provides an integrated approach to managing our natural and built environments in a systems framework. The NEMP identifies key environmental themes and guides actions to protect, rehabilitate and enhance the environment. The NEMP describes how environmental problems are to be identified, and provides guidance on how they should be addressed.
Themes in the 2003 Plan:
- Air
- Biodiversity
- Council
- Coast
- Estuary
- Energy and Greenhouse
- Land use
- Transport
- Waste
- Water
The Plan is due to be reviewed in 2011 and will reflect the community’s objectives identified in the Community Strategic Plan.
