Laman Street tree removal works underway
Tree removal works in Laman Street are now underway and people are being advised to keep clear of the area.
Director Liveable City FRANK CORDINGLEY says the safety of the work site is a prime concern for Council.
We request that members of the public respect the exclusion zone and any directions given to them.â€
The trees will generally be removed one at a time and the whole process should take about two weeks, after which Laman Street will be reopened to traffic and parking.â€
The Library and Gallery will be closed during the removal works.
Council's landscape architects and road engineers are now working on a design, cost estimates and construction program for replacing the trees, which will go before the elected Council in March.
The whole project, including the construction of root vaults and planting of replacement Hills figs, is expected to be completed in about 12 months.
The elected Council resolved on July 19 last year to remove the trees because they pose an unacceptable risk to public safety and are a traffic hazard in severe weather events.
