We sought feedback on a proposal to replace the children's crossing on Wallarah Road, near Womboin Road, New Lambton, with a raised pedestrian crossing including kerb extensions and footpath connections.

Background

Pedestrian safety and traffic calming on Wallarah Road has been identified as a priority due to the proximity to Lambton High School and the adjacent sporting fields.

A children's crossing was approved in 2020 and installed in 2021, however, this crossing has presented some practical issues due to its distance from the school. In line with the planned future improvements of the sporting fields and traffic calming in Wallarah Road, it was proposed to upgrade the crossing to provide a more useable facility throughout the year. This is due to the additional benefits in the evenings with improved lighting, access to sports facilities outside school drop off and pick up times, and traffic calming provided by the raised threshold.

The proposal for a raised pedestrian crossing on Wallarah Road was presented at the Newcastle City Traffic Committee. The committee supported undertaking community consultation to seek feedback on the proposal.

This consultation was being undertaken to ensure that the community is informed and has the opportunity to raise any concerns, prior to reporting to Council for approval.

What was proposed

  • Construction of a raised pedestrian crossing on Wallarah Road, near Womboin Road north of the location of the existing children's crossing
  • Construction of kerb extensions
  • New footpath on the western side of Wallarah Road, to connect with the cycleway
  • Upgrade of street lighting to meet Australian Standards
  • Signage and line marking
  • Tree planting on Wallarah Road

Thanks for having your say!
