Pamela Mei-Leng See is an Australian artist born of Chinese descent. She uses the ancient craft of paper cutting, which originated in China, to make works of art that address contemporary issues. In this work See has chosen a propaganda poster from the Cultural Revolution. The leaf forms cut from the political poster represent the leaves from a willow species introduced by Chairman Mao that has had a lasting impact on Beijing and its residents, choking the air with its pollen laden catkins every spring.
