Art Sounds is a new and innovative performance program partnered by Newcastle City Council, The Octapod Association, Hunter TAFE and the University of Newcastle, with ABC 1233 Newcastle to provide media support for the program.
Art Sounds aims to create a cultural buzz throughout the Civic Precinct with the presentation of a monthly art and music event hosted by participating venues on a pre-selected Friday evening. The Arts Sounds events will showcase a cross section of local music genres and performers. The project mixes visual and performing arts in locations that are free, open to all ages and music genres and provides local performers and musicians with paid gigs in new spaces.
Art Sounds commenced in February 2009, and was initially intended to run through until June. However, due to the enormous success of the program, with around 200 people attending each performance, the program has been extended until November 2009.
The first stage of Art Sounds involved 55 artists from a range of music genres including electronica, a world music choir, blues, folk, rock and jazz. Stay tuned to the Newcastle City Council Art Sounds web page for full details of coming performances.
