Undoubtedly Newcastle’s most spectacular vantage point, Fort Scratchley Historic Site is a unique nationally significant heritage site that has unrivaled panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean, north to Nobbys Lighthouse, Headland and the Harbour, south across Newcastle Beach and Ocean Baths.

You can now enjoy a stroll around the site to soak in the history, taking in the breathtaking views, enjoy dolphin and whale-watching with a picnic.

Open Hours

The Fort is open 6 days - 10am to 4pm, Wednesday's to Monday's (closed Tuesday).

General admission and self guided tours are free. Paid Guided Tours (full site and/or tunnels) are conducted Saturday & Sunday’s 11am & 2pm, plus other times depending on availability or by appointment.

Group Tour Bookings

To register your interest please download the Group Tour Bookings form and return to Newcastle City Council.

Event Bookings and Room Hire Information

The Fort Scratchley Historical Site will be available to hire for events outside of normal open hours. These events may include: photography, wedding ceremonies and filming.

Some rooms within the Site will be available for hire in the near future, along with the Multi-Purpose Centre, which is currently undergoing a Development Application assessment for the future use.

Further information in relation to costs and use will be provided as soon as possible.

Community Preview Weekend

Three days of events were held in the Fort Scratchley Precinct to acknowledge the official hand over after restoration works of the Fort by the Commonwealth of Australia to the citizens of Newcastle. These events were from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 June and featured

  • DVD screening of “Using Fort Scratchley Re-deployed…the story of a location in transition…” Produced, written & directed by Susan Kerrigan University of Newcastle
  • Parade and exhibition of ex-military vehicles to the fort
  • Public performances by Department of Education & Training Hunter/Central Coast Wind Ensemble.
  • Official ceremony inside the Fort for the completion of works and transfer of ownership.
  • Community Celebrations at the Fort including tunnel tours and gun firing demonstrations.
