Newcastle Ocean Baths was opened in 1922 and Merewether Baths in 1935.
Merewether Baths are open all year round (subject to maintenance and cleaning).
The Baths are patrolled from 9am to 5pm from 21 September 2013 to 27 April 2014.
Note: Hunter Water are currently working in and around the promenade area. Please follow directional signage around the work site. The Baths will remain open while the works are underway.

8am to 4.30pm, 28 April 2014 to 19 September
6am to 9pm, during daylight saving
6am to 4.30pm, winter months 28 April 2014 to 19 September 2014

Council aims to provide clean and tidy beach and ocean baths amenities, safe for all users.
Water tests are conducted at both of the Baths on a weekly basis by Council's Laboratory Technician. The Baths have a record of high water quality levels, find out more.
Newcastle beaches and ocean baths are regularly used for
- major sporting and social events
- motion picture filming
- swimwear and other fashion shoots
- swimming carnivals
- wedding parties
- family and social functions.
You need to get an event licence from Council to hold any event at Newcastle's Beaches or Ocean Baths (excluding small informal events).

Winter Swimming Clubs
Winter Swimming Clubs train and compete at both Ocean Baths. The 'Merewether Mackerels' and 'Dixon Park Coldies' swim all year round, even during the cooler winter water temperatures.
