Picnic spots
Blackbutt Reserve has five main picnic area each with their own unique features making it easy to find a location to suit your needs.
Richley Reserve Picnic Area
(Entrance via Freyberg Street, New Lambton)
This area is full of history, an active mine site for over 30 years the area has been restored to a beautiful peaceful picnic area. With large grassed flats, barbeques and picnic tables this is the ideal location for any family function.
Facilities: Toilets, playground, three barbecue shelters (one wheelchair accessible), electric and wood fired barbecues and two duck ponds.
Lily Pond Picnic Area
(Entrance via Mahogany Drive, New Lambton)
This secluded area is beautiful during the summer months when the White Lily’s are in flower. Keen observers will also see an array of native wildlife including Rosellas and Eastern Water Dragons.
Facilities: Picnic tables, wood fired barbecues.
Dead Tree Picnic Area
(Entrance via Mahogany Drive, New Lambton)
This quite and tranquil location is ideal for small and intimate gatherings. Only a short walk to the car park and amenities and contains traditional wood fired barbeques and picnic tables.
Facilities: Picnic tables, wood fired barbecues, toilets at Mahogany Drive car park.
Rainforest Area
(Entrance via Lookout Road, New Lambton Heights)
This is the perfect location for any nature lover. The restored rainforest is home to approximately 15,000 Grey-headed Flying foxes, currently listed as a vulnerable species in New South Wales. This amazing sight is a must for all Blackbutt Reserve visitors.
Facilities: Playground, picnic tables, wood fired barbecues, two car parks.
Black Duck Picnic Area
(Entrance via Carnley Avenue, Kotara)
This family friendly location boasts a range of captive native wildlife exhibits including koalas, wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, emus and native birds. A children’s playground, duck pond, barbeque shelters and information centre can also be found at this entrance.
