The Beacon was commissioned by the Honeysuckle Development Corporation. As with much of Geoffrey Barlett’s work it is monumental in scale and employs very formal techniques and language.Bartlett says of his public works, “…much of the appeal of these works, lies in their ability to generate energy in the surroundings they contrast and achieving a life of their own.” This particular piece exploits, gravity and the tensile strength of its materials. It draws our attention to the ideas of time, the machine and the natural elements while the strong nautical theme captures the essence of travel and discovery with the masthead, sprocket and sail, also embodying the history and technical achievements of Newcastle’s industry.
