Panoramas of forgotten places
A pictorial history of Newcastle showing some rarely seen panoramas of the city's from 1890.
The photographs show a Newcastle, vastly different from today’s post BHP city.
Included in the display is a panoramic sketch of Newcastle from Newcomen Street created by John Rae. The sketch was part of a set of panoramic sketches of New South Wales which were sent to the Calcutta International Exhibition in 1883. The Daily Telegraph [6 October, 1883] described the Newcastle sketch: “Every building in the then township is shown, there not being more than fifty or sixty. Amongst the most elevated are the military barracks and a Wesleyan church, whilst the present site of the railway station, or its immediate neighbourhood, is a chain of ponds. These have been reclaimed, the paddocks on the hillside have been covered with substantial edifices, the old church has disappeared.”
Other photographs in the display include Newcastle Harbour in 1903, 1908 and 1928; the photographs are taken looking from the Cathedral across Newcastle, Newcastle East, the harbour to Nobbys, Stockton Bight, the River Islands and Port Waratah.
A Newcastle Beach and Ocean baths panorama from 1914 illustrates our ongoing love of the outdoors.
The photos capture a period of change for the city – from early settlement to the industrial landscapes of The Newcastle Steelworks era.
