Local Studies
The collection began in 1957 following a donation of local history material from Wilfred Goold F.R.A.H.S. & has continued to grow to become one of the largest collections of its kind in Australia.
Over time, the focus of the collection has broadened to encompass all aspects of life in the Hunter Region. History, people, geology, geography, art & literature are all represented in the collection.
We hope you enjoy viewing the photographs we have posted so far. Check back regularly as we add new pics from our collection.
Please note: items in the Local Studies Collection are not for loan but may be viewed in the library during opening hours.
Online exhibition:
Eat: History features photographs from the library’s local studies collection which revisits the edible, appetising & tasty history of food in Newcastle & the Hunter during the 20th century.
