    Council encourages all pet owners to be responsible for their pet's actions. Pets are referred to as "companion animals".

    Responsible cat ownership means providing proper housing and food for your cat and making sure you follow responsible breeding practises.

  • Dogs

    Being a responsible dog owner is easy. There are six things you can do to be a responsible pet owner:

  • Complaints about dogs

    Barking dogs create more disputes between neighbours than any other issue, with The City of Newcastle receiving more that 3,000 complaints every year.

  • Leash free areas

    Dogs are only allowed to be off- leash in designated areas approved by Council.

  • Microchipping

    All cats and dogs must be permanently identified with a microchip

  • Registration

    There are may reasons why registering your cats and dogs is important.

  • The Pound

    Council officers will impound dogs when they are found straying.

  • Birds & other animals

    There are standards in place for keeping certain birds and animals.
