Stormwater Improvement Works, Boscawen Street

We are improving Wallsend's resilience to stormwater. Work is starting soon on the replacement of the Boscawen Street bridge to help Ironbark Creek better manage heavy rain events which historically affect Wallsend Town Centre.

The bridge replacement is an important step to reduce the impact of flooding during major rain events and allow the town centre to thrive. Work on the $5 million project, will increase the height of the bridge deck and double its span up to 24 metres to accommodate the future widening of Hunter Water's stormwater channel.

The benefits of the new Boscawen Street Bridge will extend beyond flood mitigation measures, delivering a safer and more visually attractive link in the road network between Federal Park and the CBD, as well as enhanced connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians via a new shared pathway.

It will also pave the way for City of Newcastle's planned program of traffic improvements and amenity upgrades to the Wallsend town centre, which will support businesses and residents in this growing western suburb.

What to expect during construction

After commencement on site the works will take around twelve months to complete (weather dependent).

Traffic controls will be in place along Boscawen Street with potential road closures to occur at times, during construction. Please follow the directions of our signage and our staff on site. There will be some noise from machinery and increased truck movements in and around the work zone.
