Gateway Cities Report

On Monday 25 November 2019, the City of Newcastle joined with the City of Wollongong, City of Geelong, the Committee for Geelong, and the Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure, The Hon Alan Tudge to launch Australia’s Gateway Cities: Gateways to Growth report at Parliament House in Canberra. The report identifies three Gateway Cities: Newcastle, Wollongong and Geelong, and highlights the significant role they play for the Australian economy.

Collectively, the three Gateway Cities are well positioned to facilitate new industries and jobs, while also providing the amenity and lifestyle people desire. The research advocates for greater strategic investment in gateway cities by all three tiers of government and identifies four steps each tier of government can take to work in lockstep with each other:

  • Collaboration and prioritisation strategy
  • Housing, services and infrastructure
  • Mobility and access options
  • Project priorities

The research report includes nine recommendations for action. Most notably, the report advocates for greater strategic investment in Gateway Cities by all three tiers of government and has led to the establishment of a strategic alliance between the City of Newcastle, City of Wollongong and City of Greater Geelong.
