City streets back to normal post-Supercars

Traffic devices are being installed this week along the Newcastle 500 track as the city returns to business as usual after the inaugural Newcastle 500 event.

These devices include the roundabout and associated traffic management devices at Wharf Road as well as the pedestrian crossings throughout the event precinct. Installation will be complete by the evening of Sunday 21 January.

"The roundabout and approach islands at Wharf Road and Watt Street have been installed, which will make that area much easier and safer to negotiate for both drivers and pedestrians," said Newcastle City Council CEO Jeremy Bath.

"Crews are also working on the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing in front of Scotties and Sticky Rice at Scott Street and Zaara Street, and another pedestrian crossing on Parnell Place at Stevenson Place," he said.

"All of this infrastructure can be removed in the weeks leading up to this year's Newcastle 500 and reinstalled post-race so that we can return the streets along the track to a normal state as quickly as possible."

"Normally this would have occurred in the post-event bump out however there was a delay this year in the delivery of the new traffic devices. Now that we have the new traffic devices there will be no delays post future Supercars events"

Bath noted that night works will be required for completion of one of the projects.

On Saturday 20 January, pedestrian crossings will be installed at two locations on Watt Street from Hunter to King Street, with road closure from 7pm for approximately 8 hours.
