We are installing a creative, interactive lighting feature as part of our upgrade of James Street Plaza. We recently asked the community to vote for their preferred lighting design, which were developed to celebrate Hamilton’s unique character and heritage and light up the space at night.
Once installed, the lighting display will project moving images on the wall of the ANZ Bank after dark. Three concepts were developed, and the concept that received the most votes will be developed into a full-length lighting display to be launched after we finish our construction.

Option 1: Hamilton’s Dance Heritage
From post war jitterbugs to today’s street buskers – dance and music are the rhythmic beating heart of Hamilton. Dance has the uncanny power to bring together people from different walks of life, and this design celebrates Hamilton’s multicultural story.
Option 2: Hamilton’s Microcosmic Mosaic
This abstract design celebrates Hamilton’s character with vibrancy and energy. Bright colours and bold lines will explore Hamilton’s people, place, community and culture – in a nod to the mosaic designs found along Beaumont Street.
Option 3: Coal Mining to Cosmopolitan Eat Street
Once thick with coal dust Hamilton has emerged as a culinary wonder. This display will show the journey of Hamilton and celebrate the food of its wonderful restaurants and bars.
