Bathers Way - Newcastle Beach

Planning for the next stage of the Bathers Way project is ongoing. Currently we’re focusing on Bather Way – Newcastle Beach.

As this is the most complex stage and includes upgrades to Newcastle Beach between Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club and King Edward Park the project is divided into two phases: 

• Stage 1: The Bathers Way Newcastle Beach and Recreational Facilities 
• ​Stage 2: Newcastle Community Hub (subject to funding) 

What we heard  

We carried out broad community engagement activities for the Bathers Way - Newcastle Beach in December 2018, including drop-in sessions at four locations across the Local Government Area and an online survey. 
 
Having carefully considered what we heard from stakeholders and the community we revised the design and sought additional community feedback in July and August 2019 on a concept plan which incorporates a skate park and bowl west of the existing seawall while maintaining the other elements of the Bathers Way. This concept was open for community feedback in July 2019 with 80 per cent of respondents supporting the project. 

This is a significant indication that the updated plans have been well received in contrast to the previous plans that were presented in late 2018.  

In late 2019 the South Newcastle Beach Skatepark Community Reference Group provided input into the specific design elements and uses of the skate park and surround space.  

Following this consultation indicative designs have now been prepared.

Our Bathers Way – King Edward Park to Newcastle Beach Community Reference Group meets to recap on the project to date, including the results of the 2018 engagement and design changes, and to give feedback on the latest plans.

The Bathers Way CRG provides broad representation of groups including boardriders, residents and Indigenous stakeholders, giving us important input into the delivery of this project.

Finalisation of the detailed design for Bathers Way - Newcastle Beach is expected in early 2020 with construction to commence in mid-2020.
