Newcastle Collections

For more than 50 years Newcastle Region Library has been committed to collecting the history and heritage of Newcastle. Over that time the Library has acquired an extensive and important collection of books, documents, archives, maps, pictures and photographs which document the story of Newcastle. With the help of many benefactors this collection has become a collection of significance not only to Newcastle but  to wider audiences around Australia and the World.

Archives & State Records

The Library is the archival repository for the records of Newcastle City Council and holds other significant archival collections from public institutions, private companies and individuals.

Maps & Plans

The Local Studies Library holds a large collection of historical maps and plans. The collection includes parish maps, subdivision and real estate plans, and architectural plans and drawings.

Heritage Collections

The Library's Local Studies Collections document the heritage of Newcastle and the Hunter, most notably our maritime heritage, industrial heritage and sporting heritage.

Find up-to-date demographic, economic, and social and community statistics as well as key characteristics of the Newcastle area.


The Local Studies Library has a collection of paintings and pictures which capture Newcastle's past. You can also view a selection of our images online.

Special Collections

The Library has a number of collections which feature rare, unique and notable items, many of which came through generous donations from members of the community.
