Elected Council
The elected Council makes decisions on behalf of the community about a range of matters.

Council meetings
Council meets every third and fourth Tuesday of the month except for December when it will meet on the second and third Tuesday of the month.

Committees
Strategic Advisory Committees are advisory committees to Council whose objectives are to provide independent advice to Newcastle City Council within the respective terms of reference of the committees.

Community consultation
The City of Newcastle consults with the community in a range of ways. Your feedback and ideas are important to us.

Delivery plan and budget
The City of Newcastle Delivery Program outlines the plans, programs and budget for the next four years. The Program includes the operational plan for 2011/2011.

Projects & works
This financial year The City of Newcastle will spend $9.5 million improving roads and footpaths, $11.3million improving coastal assets, sporting grounds, parks and playgrounds and $1.5 million maintaining community facilities.

Rates
Approximately 50% of the income Council gets to pay for its services comes from your rates.

Access to information
Your rights to access Council information are provided in the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) (GIPAA). The Act commenced on 1 July 2010 and replaces the Freedom of Information Act 1989 (NSW) and section 12 of the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW).

Council organisation
Newcastle City Council was formed in April 1938 with the merger of Adamstown, Carrington, Hamilton, Lambton, Merewether, Newcastle, New Lambton, Stockton, Wallsend, Waratah and Wickham Councils.
