What's happening at Georgetown Local Centre?

We're upgrading the area to make it safer, easier to get around, and more attractive, while keeping the character that makes Georgetown special.

Project update

We're working near Vinny's Takeaway to install pedestrian refuges, new landscaping, and additional seating, helping to improve safety and create a more welcoming local centre.

Work is also underway on Parkview Street, near Georgetown Vet, to create a continuous pathway, add new seating, and improve landscaping. As part of these upgrades, the eastbound bus stop is being relocated from 49 to 63 Georgetown Road and upgraded with a new shelter to provide better protection from sun and rain for public transport users.

The upgrades will:

  • Create better places to meet and relax with wider footpaths, new seating, upgraded street furniture, and a new public plaza
  • Improve safety for people walking, riding bikes, and driving through better roads, footpaths, and pedestrian crossings
  • Beautify the natural environment by planting new street trees and refreshing landscaping
  • Upgrade underground essential services with a new water main and stormwater drainage system.

These improvements will make Georgetown a safer, more welcoming place for locals, visitors, and businesses. The upgraded centre will also offer an alternative to larger shopping centres, including EV charging stations.

Early works were completed in 2024 and in September 2025, we started construction on the Streetscape works associated with this Local Centre Upgrade. Read more below about each stage of works.

Early works were completed in 2024, and were focused on supporting the existing 40km/h zone with new speed control devices like kerb extensions and traffic calming to improve safety through the local centre.

Additional entry infrastructure was also installed at 35 Moate Street, and 30 and 76 Georgetown Road, to support these works.

As part of City of Newcastle's commitment to supporting the growing number of EV drivers who live in and visit Newcastle, two 60kw charger ports were installed at 33 Moate Street.

Streetscape works got underway in September 2025, and are focused on enhancing the safety, accessibility, and look of the centre while respecting Georgetown's charm and character.

Key improvements during this phase of works include:

  • Upgrading underground assets, including a new watermain and stormwater drainage
  • Renewed road surfaces and better footpaths for easier walking and access
  • Upgraded street furniture
  • More green space with new street trees and refreshed landscaping

We know it's important to keep Georgetown moving during construction. That's why the work is being completed in stages, allowing businesses to remain open and local traffic to continue while maintaining safe access for pedestrians.

A new public plaza will be created at the intersection of Moate Street and Georgetown Road.

The plaza will be a welcoming space where people can meet, relax, and connect with the community. It will support local businesses, strengthen Georgetown's village atmosphere, and improve cycling connections between Asher Street and Parkview Street.

Community feedback showed that residents value Georgetown's strong sense of community and want high-quality public spaces. The new plaza is designed to deliver exactly that.
