Recruitment of permanent council boss begins

26 Sept 2017

Newcastle City Council resolved to begin recruitment of a permanent Chief Executive Officer last night.

Council voted at the first meeting of the new three-year term to support a Lord Mayoral Minute recommending a thorough selection process for a permanent council boss.

Councillors Carol Duncan, John MacKenzie and Jason Dunn were appointed to the recruitment panel together with the Lord Mayor last night.

They will be joined by a representative of an appointed recruitment agency.

"The recruitment panel will have delegation to manage the process for recruitment and selection," Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

"And then the decision to appoint a permanent CEO will be taken by the elected Council after a recommendation is made by the panel later this year."

Candidates will be shortlisted by the panel by 22 November before interviews in the week starting Monday 26 November.

Once the panel makes a recommendation, the Lord Mayor will report it to a meeting of the elected Council as soon as possible ahead of an official offer to the preferred candidate.

A Council resolution of 31 March 2017 recommended the recruitment of a permanent Chief Executive Officer as a matter for the newly elected Council after the 9 September election.
