Sign up for garage sale trail

28 Sept 2017

Novocastrians looking to offload unwanted household items are invited to sign up for next month's community-friendly Garage Sale Trail event to help promote sustainability and reduce the need to take unwanted items to Summerhill.

The free event on the weekend of 21-22 October is Australia’s biggest re-use event which promotes resourcefulness and good neighbourly relations.

Sellers can host a sale as a household, street or community group to make money individually or fundraise for a cause.

"Council is proud to promote this national initiative that encourages residents to help us divert waste from landfill," Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

"Garage Sale Trail helps people think about how we can all take responsibility for the waste we create. It's also a simple way for people to meet and talk to people in their community.

"It’s the biggest community and sustainability event in Australia, so I encourage Newcastle residents to get involved."

Last year, around 60 Newcastle households opened their garage or held stalls to sell unwanted items to around 2,000 buyers.

Nationally, more than 15,000 garages or stalls open to neighbourhoods and put around 2 million items up for sale.

To make it easier to find the treasure in your neighbourhood, buyers can now search online by postcode, suburb, item or category.

Council encourages Newcastle residents who hold sales to pre-book a bulk waste pick-up or voucher if they're planning to dispose of unsold items.

To use either of these services, complete a waste request form on Council's website or phone 4974 2000 weekdays during business hours.
