Perkins Street Retaining Wall

We are completing structural upgrade works to the existing stone retaining wall and stairs between Church Street and Perkins Street, Newcastle which is currently closed to public access. The heritage sandstone wall and stairs require rectification works to allow them to be safely reopened to the public.

The existing stairs will remain closed for the duration of the works. An area at the base of the stairs will be fenced off for construction activities within the road reserve. This involves the installation of a structural frame to support the stone wall during the main upgrade works. This structural frame will be removed on completion of the upgrade.

The works started in January and are expected to be completed in October 2023 (weather permitting).

The work will involve the use of machinery which generates noise and may limit access to driveways for short periods of time. Pedestrians are advised to please consider using Wolfe Street as a safer route for access between Church and King Street.

We will make every effort to preserve the structure while ensuring the safety of pedestrians.
