The Tramway track or Wallsend to Glendale shared pathway was officially opened on 1 June 2012 and is three metres wide, 3.65 kilometres in length, running from Ganney Street, Wallsend to Frederick Street, Glendale.
The pathway connects Lake Macquarie residents to bike routes that can take them to the John Hunter Hospital, the University of Newcastle and Tighes Hills TAFE; and Newcastle residents with Glendale TAFE. The gentle gradient of the corridor makes the climb between the two suburbs much easier and safer than the alternate route along Lake Road.
The corridor use to be part of the former steam tramway between West Wallsend and Speers Point, which operated from 1912 to 1930.
Half of the project costs were funded by the State Government through the Roads and Maritime Services (formerly the RTA). Lake Macquarie City Council and City of Newcastle jointly funded the balance.
The track has been a long standing project for both councils, with the path identified as a key route in the Newcastle Area Bike Plan of 1981 and the Newcastle Lake Macquarie Bike Plan 1996 (now both superseded by the Newcastle Cycling Strategy and the Lake Macquarie Cycling Strategy).
Like the Fernleigh Track and Tramway track offer great potential for not only recreational cycling but also cycling for transport and walking.
